ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Temple B’nai Jeshurun (TBJ), the largest Reform synagogue in New Jersey, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Development. This is a unique opportunity to lead key development initiatives and deepen engagement within a vibrant and active 1,270-family congregation. TBJ offers an ideal environment for a dedicated development leader to harness and expand the community’s passion for philanthropy and grow support for transformational projects, including managing an ongoing capital campaign.

Reporting to the Executive Director and partnering with inspiring clergy, the Director of Development will collaborate with a highly motivated, growing Development team and engaged lay leadership.

Key Responsibilities Include:
Development Leadership & Strategy

  • Create, implement, and execute strategies for cultivating and stewarding TBJ donors, including capital and planned giving and other fundraising campaigns and programs.
  • Manage an ongoing $10 million capital campaign, including strategic planning, implementation, and solicitations.
  • Collaborate with the Development team, clergy, and the Development Committee of the Board to identify, cultivate, and steward major donors, foundations, and corporate partners.

Fundraising Events & Community Engagement

  • Coordinate and execute donor stewardship through strategic outreach, events, and solicitations.
  • Develop and execute bi-annual gala and other fundraising events that engage the community and raise additional funds for the operating budget.
  • Identify, engage, and mentor Board members and volunteers for various fundraising committees, ensuring robust community involvement guided by best practices in fundraising.

Development Operations & Communications

  • Initiate and conduct donor research, creating concise and accurate materials for solicitations.
  • Ensure effective donor tracking, moves management system, gift processing, and acknowledgements in coordination with TBJ administration.
  • Maintain and update the fundraising page on TBJ’s website, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • 3-5 years of substantive experience in fundraising, including donor relations and solicitation; experience engaging and cultivating Board members is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement development strategy and meet ambitious fundraising goals.
  • Experience crafting persuasive solicitation materials including case statements, proposals, and grant applications.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information with excellent judgement.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with a track record of leveraging donor databases and establishing systems that promote collaboration and efficiency.
  • Understanding of the Jewish communal and philanthropic landscape is a plus.

Other Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Ability to work in the office five days a week with potential for flexible hours.
  • Ability to work some evenings and a few weekends per year.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this role is $90,000-$100,000 per year commensurate on experience.
