ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) is a partner in the vital work Magen David Adom (MDA). MDA is Israel’s national ambulance, blood-services, and disaster-relief organization, as well as Israel’s representative to the International Red Cross providing a crucial link in the chain of survival for seriously injured or ill patients. MDA has 1,300 ambulances across the country and deploys about 600 Medicycles and more than 10,000 first responders, arriving first to the scene of medical emergencies more than 91% of the time. AFMDA supports Magen David Adom’s efforts to save lives in Israel with donations from the United States.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for managing a $60 million budget with a diverse funding base. The CFO will be a proven leader and financial and strategic business partner for senior leadership and the National Board, with the ability to manage and develop the finance team. The CFO will have demonstrated ability to recommend and implement financial policies; oversee and manage budgets, treasury, payroll, accounting, annual audit; have strong knowledge of financial relations with US and Israel, manage investments and other financial matters. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position oversees a Finance Department of 5 staff members and will be required to assist in the recruitment and performance evaluations of finance and accounting staff.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, savvy CFO to join a fast-growing organization. Since October 7, 2023, AFMDA has received unprecedented support and is looking for a strategic CFO to ensure that these funds are invested and managed properly in order to maintain operations while continuing the organization’s growth trajectory.

Key responsibilities include:

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve on the organization’s Executive leadership Team, helping to develop and execute multi-year business plans and strategies that advance org-wide priorities and intended impact.
  • Lead the design and assessment of financial strategy and performance as it relates to managing against the annual budget and long-term investment goal, while fostering organizational effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Prepare and present financial reports, financial analysis, and decision-making support to the CEO and Board of Directors, with closes engagement with the executive, audit, and investment committees of the board.
  • Oversee staff on all financial matters related to AFMDA, including the Israel office, the regional offices, and the national headquarters office.
  • Oversee the preparation of all financial statements and audit preparation documents.

Financial Analysis, Strategy, and Budgeting

  • Develop and implement a sound investment strategy for AFMDA in concert with the Finance and Investment Committees of the National Board. Ensure proper ongoing investment management.
  • Develop and implement cash management policies with special emphasis on the working capital fund, endowments, and program development funds.
  • Monitor and analyze financial performance with specific emphasis on cash flow, project expenses and restricted funds to make recommendations to the Finance & Audit Committees and Board of Directors to improve the overall financial health of the organization.
  • Develop accounting reporting policies relative to nationwide fundraising campaigns.
  • Ensure complete and up-to-date operating procedures for all accounting and financial controls, including maintenance of effective internal controls to assure safeguarding of assets and reliability of financial statements.
  • Ensure an orderly and legal procedure of distributing the funds raised by AFMDA in a manner consistent with the donor’s intent.
  • Ensure all state charitable solicitation filings, tax, and informational returns are completed and filed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Develop, negotiate, and maintain business and financial relationships with banks and auditors.

Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, inspire, and evaluate the performance of a diverse team of professional and technical staff, understanding their strengths, and encouraging individual professional growth.
  • Cultivate a strong team culture by ensuring clarity of accountabilities, transparency, and recognizing contributions.

ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:
The CFO will be a highly credible and accomplished financial strategist, leader, and manager committed to the mission, vision, and impact of AMFDA.

The successful candidates will bring a high level of integrity and strong ethical standards as well as a, forward-thinking, people-oriented, and energetic approach to financial management and budgeting, investment strategies, and team development.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10+ years significant accounting, financial, and management experience, with an emphasis on US and Israel financial relations, Jewish philanthropy, international accounting.
  • Demonstrated success leveraging exceptional strategic thinking and analysis to improve systems and processes, navigate complexity, overcome challenges, and achieve impact. Strong systems skills required.
  • Extensive experience working with foreign currency and foreign exchange rates, emphasis on USD to Shekels.
  • Experience managing investments, including strategizing, monitoring performance, and planning with the Board Investment Committee.
  • Experience creating and managing endowment or similar investment funds.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
  • Proficiency in financial software and systems.
  • Excellent and creative problem-solving skills, follow-through with projects, and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with direct experience in working with and presenting to Boards.
  • Collaborative management and working style with a diverse workforce.
  • Demonstrated track record of building and developing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of growth, mentorship and coaching to team members.
  • Deep knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, with demonstrated experience in accounting software, knowledge of NetSuite a plus.

EDUCATION: BA/BS required; MBA, CPA, CFA, CFP or equivalent advanced accounting and financial experience preferred.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Salary range for this role is $275,000 – $325,000 commensurate with experience.
