Broome Street Academy seeks nominations or interest for a hands-on and committed board member to contribute to its growth and guide the mission.

MISSION

Broome Street Academy (BSA) is a tuition-free public charter high school devoted to providing students the necessary skills and support to graduate prepared for a successful future beyond high school. Our admissions policy gives preference to students who are homeless, in foster care, or from low performing schools. A BSA graduate will possess the 21st-century knowledge, collaborative and technological skills and personal qualities that will enable them to contribute to their community and pursue their educational and professional goals.

BSA comprehensively serves some of New York City’s most vulnerable students through a unique partnership with — and co-location within — one of the City’s premier youth development organizations, The Door. Under the leadership of Kelsey Louie, the model merges academic, social, and emotional services to prepare students to graduate prepared for a successful future. Through the support found at BSA and The Door, New York City’s most at-risk students will realize their greatest potential.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Members of the Board of Directors of BSA are expected, first and foremost, to have a strong passion for Broome Street Academy’s mission. Broome Street Academy is an unparalleled model for youth education and as such, being part of this trail-blazing school requires a commitment to our forward-thinking and inclusive approach.

The outline below articulates the duties and expectations of members of BSA’s Board of Directors.

  1. Commitment to Mission: Demonstrate a strong passion for Broome Street Academy’s mission, serving as a dedicated advocate for our forward-thinking and inclusive approach to youth education.
  2. Active Participation: Prepare for and actively engage in the Board’s monthly meetings, attending in person whenever possible. Your presence and input are invaluable for informed decision-making.
  3. Leadership and Governance: Provide oversight of the CEO’s role and performance, chair or serve on at least one board committee, and assist in identifying potential partners, contributors, and board candidates to further strengthen our organization and ensure board diversity.
  4. Strategic Planning: Collaborate with board peers and the executive management team to regularly reassess organizational goals in response to the evolving educational and socioeconomic landscape in New York City.
  5. Fundraising Support: Contribute to Broome Street Academy’s financial sustainability by making a personal, meaningful donation each fiscal year and actively participating in fundraising efforts, including soliciting private financial support.
