ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
American Friends of the Israel Museum (AFIM) is a non-profit organization that raises funds for the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, in addition to acquiring art, either through purchase (with raised funds) or as gifts (from living donors or by bequests), in the United States. The Museum’s holdings are encyclopedic, covering pre-historic to contemporary art.
AFIM runs a full program of events throughout the year for various groups of supporters, as well as four annual fundraising events in New York, LA, and Palm Beach with other events throughout the country. AFIM has a current staff of 4 in New York and 1 in Los Angeles.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
AFIM seeks a strategic and detail-oriented Director of Finance & Administration (Director) to lead its financial and administrative operations. This is a key leadership role responsible for all accounting, financial reporting, investment reconciliation, and administrative functions in a complex nonprofit organization with a diverse funding base and significant endowment.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director will serve as a strategic thought partner and liaison to the AFIM Board’s Finance and Investment Committees and maintain a collaborative relationship with the CFO of the Israel Museum. This role ensures the integrity of AFIM’s financial systems and operations, including audit and tax compliance, budgeting, payroll, benefits administration, and internal controls.
Financial Oversight & Management
- Prepare and present financial reports, financial analysis, and decision-making support to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Ensure timely, GAAP-compliant accounting with rigorous internal controls.
- Maintain general ledger and record all financial transactions including contributions, disbursements, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Manage investment portfolio accounting, including recording activity and reporting to the Investment Committee.
- Reconcile donor records and revenue in collaboration with the development team.
- Coordinate the transmission of funds to the Israel Museum and ensure proper documentation.
- Lead the annual audit process with external auditors and review the organization’s tax return.
- Present final audit and tax reports to the Executive Committee.
Program Support, Financial Analysis & Budgeting
- Partner with development staff to reconcile monthly revenue to Donor Perfect reporting.
- Collaborate with database manager on acknowledging donor receipts.
- Develop and monitor annual and quarterly budgets.
- Identify and resolve accounting issues and irregularities; recommend improvements to internal controls and procedures.
- Leverage financial systems and tools to automate processes and improve efficiency and improve workflow.
Operations & Administration
- Oversee payroll processing and benefit administration; liaise with third-party vendors.
- Manage employee onboarding, HR documentation, and ongoing compliance requirements
- Manage vendor selection for office equipment and services.
- Ensure compliance and filing of pension plans and related tax returns.
- Provide general operational support to ensure smooth office functioning.
ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate will be a proactive, hands-on finance professional with deep experience in nonprofit accounting and operational management.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in accounting, financial management, and administration.
- Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
- Strong understanding of internal controls.
- Keen analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and with a collaborative mindset.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel (intermediate to advanced); familiarity with DonorPerfect is a plus.
EDUCATION: BA/BS in accounting/related degree required; CPA/MBA a plus.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Salary range for this role is $140,000 – $160,000 commensurate with experience. AFIM offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health (fully paid), dental, and vision insurance, 403 plan with employer contribution, commuter benefits, and paid time off.
