The mission of Roads to Success (RTS) is to inspire and empower all young people to take control of their futures. They envision a world where everyone has access to an equitable path to success. In order to achieve this, RTS facilitates a variety of youth programs, including after-school, summer camps, retreats, conferences, and summer employment opportunities, reaching thousands of young people throughout NYC each year. RTS emphasizes the youth development practice of the Circle of Courage in their programs, creating an environment of Belonging where young people can build their Independence, find and develop their Mastery skills, and practice Generosity in their communities. Staff training strategies at the core of their programs enable the young professionals to develop extraordinarily meaningful relationships with the young people in their care who we call Our Future Leaders because that is what they all are.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will serve as an integral member of the Executive Team and will report directly to the CEO. This role presents a unique and exciting opportunity to build and develop a fully functioning finance department with a $7MM budget oversight. The CFO will play a pivotal role in establishing effective systems of control, streamlining support to internal departments, and strategic thought leadership to the CEO.  The CFO will oversee all aspects of fiscal management for RTS and will lead the creation and implementation of a robust internal finance team, which currently includes a Director of Finance, a Billing/Receptionist, and an external Financial Service team. The organization receives significant government funding, so experience with government contracts, particularly with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), and compliance is essential. Core responsibilities include:

Executive Leadership & Organizational Strategy

  • Partner with CEO and Executive Team to establish organizational goals and serve as a thought partner while evaluating financial risks.
  • Serve as a liaison member of the Finance & Audit Committee for the Board of Directors
  • Meet regularly with CEO to review ongoing fiscal operations. Develop strategic plans and budgets to allocate resources as necessary to ensure departmental and organizational goals can be met.
  • Represent RTS at various meetings with partnering fiscal agencies and financial lending institutions as requested
  • Serve as a member of the 5-member Executive Team, working closely with all senior leaders and staff to implement the overall fiscal management and procedures throughout the agency.
  • Collaborate closely with Executive Team to ensure alignment between financial planning, program operations, and increasing budget transparency across the organization.

Fiscal Management & Oversight

  • Provide overall supervision, leadership, and direction to the Finance Department.
  • Conduct regular meetings with key staff to identify and resolve on-going issues within the Finance Department and its interaction with other departments, and entities.
  • Maximize utilization and quality of financial services.
  • Periodically assess the resource needs of the Finance Department and secure additional resources as necessary
  • Oversee Accounts Receivable to ensure accurate collectability.
  • Lead revenue cycle management by implementing data-driven strategies to optimize processes, with a primary focus on maximizing revenue from unrestricted funds and enhancing financial performance through optimized relationships with regulatory agencies.
  • Develop and execute initiatives to improve revenue cycle efficacy and accuracy, leveraging technology and industry best practice, to streamline billing, coding, and reimbursement process while ensuring compliance with all funding agency regulations and contractual agreements.
  • Establish and refine internal financial procedures and systems, ensuring they are effective, efficient, and aligned with organizational goals. Develop new processes as needed to support the growing finance department.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all regulations and compliance requirements, including oversight of audits, managing risks, and implementing measures and policies to detect and prevent fraud and abuse.

Program Support & Financial Management

  • Collaborate with program leaders, including the Chief Program Officer, Deputy Directors, and Program Managers, to establish and refine finance and administrative systems that support program operations.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting to ensure revenue and expenditures align with the operating budget and financial reporting requirements for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Lead development and management of the annual budget, overseeing adherence to budgetary guidelines and financial sustainability.
  • Manage government contract financial and insurance compliance, including tracking and reimbursement processes and ensure finance team is well-versed in specific requirements and regulations of each funding stream.

Qualifications:

  • 5 + years of experience in nonprofit accounting and progressive leadership.
  • BA/BS required; CPA and/or MBA a plus.
  • Experience with government contracts, particularly DYCD, and compliance.
  • Experience managing teams, developing talent, and inspiring collaboration; a strong record of building and leading collaborative teams.
  • Proficiency in nonprofit accounting for complex social services organizations with exposure to the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD), government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Prior experience accounting for NYC government funding within a nonprofit organization.

  • Proficient with financial and office software, including Microsoft Office and accounting packages.
  • Accountable with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility.
  • Capable of creating, analyzing, and reporting on financial statements and budgets.
  • Effective at managing priorities, meeting deadlines, and multi-tasking. 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Salary range for this role is $130,000 – $150,000 commensurate with experience. RTS offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b), life insurance, commuter benefits, flexible spending accounts, and paid time off.
