RIP’s mission is to end medical debt and be a source of justice in an unjust healthcare finance system; a unique solution for patient-centered healthcare providers; and a moral force for systemic change. In 2024, they will celebrate their 10th year of eliminating medical debt, and in 2022 they have received an $80 million dollar gift from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott, the largest in the organization’s history.

RIP is looking for a talented Vice President, Major Gifts to lead its major gifts program. This role is best for someone who is deeply interested in the organization’s mission and has experience as a frontline fundraiser working with donors of significant means.

The RIP Medical Debt Office is in Long Island City NY, minutes from Manhattan, conveniently located steps away from many major subway lines. The team has implemented and fully embraced a hybrid work environment, working from the office three days per week.



The Vice President, Major Gifts will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, qualifying, and soliciting leadership donors to raise significant revenue for RIP Medical Debt. Reporting to the President/CEO this individual will oversee all aspects of our major giving program and will coordinate with a well-established outsourced fundraising program, which includes a consultant holding the role of Vice President of Development.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability to think critically, problem solve, and communicate clearly in a collaborative environment. They must have a strong interest in the organization’s mission and non-profit work.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Fundraising Strategy

  • Work with President/CEO and outside consultants to establish annual fundraising goals based on programmatic work plans to ensure the success of RIP Medical Debt’s mission and priorities.
  • Create and implement new programs/campaigns to maximize unrestricted and restricted support for annual and multi-year commitments.
  • Oversee the growth of major gifts team over the next few years.

Fundraising Execution

  • Direct all major gift solicitation strategies and stewardship of related activities including campaigns, special events, and proposals etc.
  • Develop and manage RIP Medical Debt’s portfolio of leadership donors and prospects with clearly defined goals for annual and/or campaign support.
  • Track and report activities and progress towards goals through the fiscal year, oversee the acknowledgement and recognition processes


The successful candidate will be a dynamic, motivated, accomplished fundraiser who is business savvy, resourceful, and has a drive for excellence, growth, and results. The new VP of Major Gifts will be collaborative, inclusive, and forward thinking. Key attributes include:

  • A commitment to RIP Medical Debt’s mission, vision, and values.
  • At least five (5) years of demonstrated success as a front-line fundraiser, preferably managing an active portfolio of major donors.
  • Excellent record of donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; a high level of comfort with direct donor interaction.
  • Experience managing budgets and meeting revenue goals.
  • A go-getter with an entrepreneurial, DEI-focused mindset, who is a driven, outgoing self-starter.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use fundraising databases. Bloomerang a plus
  • Willingness to travel.


  • Base annual salary $160,000 – $200,000, commensurate with experience.
